2018 starts optimistically for Bulgarian cinema, which in 2017 won numerous international awards and competitions, but also for the first time in many years won the hearts of the Bulgarian audience

and four times took the lead in the weekly cinema box office with the films "Voevoda" by Zornitsa Sofia Popgancheva, "Gasoline" by Katerina Goranova and Assen Blatechki, Viktor Bozhinov's "Heights" and Stanislav Todorov Rogi's "Bubblegum".

In 2017, with the support of the National Film Center, were completed more than 50 short and feature, documentary and animation productions, which have been extremely successful both for the Bulgarian and world audience.

In 2015 Sofia was announced a Creative City of Cinema by UNESCO.

Since 2005, under the initiative of the National Film Center, on the 13th of January - the date of the first public projection of Vassil Gendov's film "Balgaran e galant", the Bulgarian film community commemorates its professional day.

The following year, Stephan Komandarev's fourth feature film - "Directions", was selected for the "Special Look" at the Cannes program. For the first time in 30 years a Bulgarian film falls into the prestigious selection. The co-production "Western" by Valeska Grisebach is also part of the same program. The "¾" by Ilian Metev won the Golden Leopard in Locarno's "Directors of the Present" section. A number of awards and prizes also won the documentary "The Postman" by Tonislav Hristov. Among the successful co-productions with Bulgarian participation are- the "King of the Belgians" by Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodworth; "Requiem for Ms. J" by the director Bojan Vuletic and Elina Psykou’s "Son of Sofia".

This year, on the Bulgarian cinema day - 13th of January, the National Film Center and the Sofia Municipality along with the Bulgarian National Film Archive, the National Palace of Culture, the Union of Bulgarian Filmmakers and the Union of Bulgarian Artists organize screenings of Bulgarian films at six cinemas in Sofia.

The film program is free, with the exception of the entry for the latest films like "Omnipresent", "Heights" and "Bubblegum", which will be screened at Lumiere and Odeon cinema only on the 13th of January at the special price from 5 BGN.
