Speech of H. E. Mrs. Baya Bensmail, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria to the Republic of Bulgaria,
for the opening of the exhibition of photographs from the National archives - "Glorious History & New Era"
Honorable Ministers and Excellencies,
Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,
On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Day of Independence - July 5th, 1962, the Embassy of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria to Bulgaria organizes, starting today, an exhibition of photographs from the Algerian national archives under the slogan "Glorious History & New Era". The exhibition will continue until July 21st, 2022, here, at the National Archaeological Museum in Sofia. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the guests present.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The 5th of July 1962 is a date of great historical importance, marking the end of the colonial rule that lasted 132 years, during which the heroic Algerian people suffered the scourge of injustice, persecution, murder, torture and deprivation of the most basic rights. This day is an occasion for us to celebrate the greatness of our heroic people’s history and the sacrifices it has made in its resistance against colonialism.
It is a precious date for us; a date which glorifies the memory of our homeland’s liberation through a revolution that immortalizes the history of our people. This revolution, with its epic moments, heroic acts and glories, has stood the test of time and has become a source of pride and creativity for all Algerians. With the celebration of this great anniversary, we pay our respects to the righteous martyrs who sacrificed their lives so that Algeria would be free and independent.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
This exhibition brings to you a special selection of 60 photographs from the Algerian national archives, unpublished to this day, which trace the history of the Algerian people's struggle against colonialism through all its phases - from popular resistance to the War of National Liberation (1830-1962). The exhibition commemorates the martyrs of the glorious War of National Liberation and recalls the sacrifices made by the Algerian people in the strive to restore its sovereignty and independence.
Some of the photographs exhibited here are excerpts from the documentary made by Bulgarian director Hristo Ganev, whose fate is closely linked to the struggle of the Algerian people. His documentary "Holiday of Hope", produced in 1962, immortalizes the joy of the Algerian people and their celebrations upon the declaration of Algeria's independence on July 5th, 1962.
As you know, the valuable support of the friendly Bulgarian people/nation in our fight for liberation during the Glorious revolution, as well as in our efforts to build the country following the declaration of independence, has played an important role and has resulted in the creation of strong ties of friendship between the two peoples, which remain solid to this day.
Long live the Algerian-Bulgarian friendship!
Glory to our martyrs!
