The Embassy of the Algerian Democratic and People's Republic of Bulgaria, the Association for Friendship between Bulgaria and Algeria and the Association of Algerians in Bulgaria organized a celebration of the Day of the Fighters for Independence and the Day of the Sumatran Congress.
The event took place on the 21st of August, at the Central Home of the Architect in Sofia.
At first, the participants held a one minute silence in memory of Captain Vassil Vulchanov, whose fate is closely related to the struggle of the Algerian people for independence and the strengthening of the friendship between our two countries. Later, on behalf of the Association for Friendship between Bulgaria and Algeria, Mrs. Latifa Benazza, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Algeria in Bulgaria, was given a precious gift - a painting of the ship "Breza", which was used to supply, under the command of Captain Vasil Vulchanov, weapons for the National Liberation Army fighters during the difficult moments.
Her Excellency excitedly thanked and reminded all guests of the importance of the Day of the Fighters for Independence for the Algerian people. It is related to the Algerian uprising of the 20th of August 1955 and the Sumatran Congress on the 20th of August 1956, which initiated the political structure of the National Liberation Front and the Algerian National Liberation Army. As a result, and at the cost of many victims, the independence of the country was achieved.
The evening continued with a screening of the documentary "Celebration of Hope" (1962) by the director Hristo Ganev, in which he immortalized the struggle of the Algerian people and the universal joy after the proclamation of independence. It will be remembered that hundreds of our compatriots took part in building the new image of the country after its independence.
At the cocktail party after the screening, the participants discussed at length the events of the film and the revolutionary history of Algeria.
