On the 26th of May this year, Africa Day was celebrated in the City Garden of Sofia. The Saturday atmosphere of the capital was filled with exotic and hot rhythms thanks to the embassies and honorary consulates of the African countries in Bulgaria.

Among the highlights of the program for the day were the African drums and songs, the Zulu and Soto dances, the degustation of traditional dishes and the stands with souvenirs, clothing and jewellery. The event attracted a big number of people who had the chance toallocate themselves for a moment into the African continent - South Africa, Sudan, Egypt, Algiers, Morocco, even Mauritius and Seychelles. There were also storytellers, a dance workshop, and many more...

The day of Africa was officially opened by the Doyen of the Group of African Ambassadors Accredited in Bulgaria, H. E. Ms. Vanessa Calvert, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of South Africa, Vice-President IlianaYotova, and PetkoDraganov, General Director of the Political Affairs Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The event genuinely justified the slogan "Africa in Bulgaria", as well as, the idea of ​​the doyen to bring Africa to Bulgaria and show the Bulgarians what the sunny continent is about with its traditions, customs, sights and cuisine.

This year the Africa Day – 25th of May, also marks 55 years since the signing of the African Union Unification Treaty, which was later transformed into an African Union. Its aims are to ensure peace on the continent, to develop democracy and to respect human rights and freedoms.
