Africa Day is celebrated every year around the world on May 25th. On that day, 56 years ago, was signed African Union Unification Treaty, later transformed into an African Union.

Its aims are to ensure peace on the continent, to develop democracy and to respect human rights and freedoms.

Africa Day in Sofia was celebrated on June 29 with an open-air event in the City Garden, which continued throughout the day. A wonderful festival of African culture, organized by the missions and honorary consulates of the African countries in Bulgaria - Algiers, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Seychelles, Uganda, South Africa. The State of Palestine, whose ambassador is a dean of the diplomatic corps in our country also took part.

The day of Africa was opened by H. E. Ms. Latifa Benazza, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Algeria to Bulgaria and the Dean of the Group of African Heads of Mission and Honorary Consuls resident in Bulgaria. The countries presented to the citizenns of Sofia and their guests traditional dishes and wines, stalls with souvenirs, clothing and jewelery. A rich cultural program of African songs and dances made the audience dream about distant and hot countries.

All proceeds from sales of souvenirs, products and dishes from the different countries were donated to elderly people care in Bulgaria.
