From the 23rd to the 25th of September at the Odeon cinema the film buffs of Sofia had the opportunity to enjoy a great selection of Portuguese films.
The Festival of Portuguese cinema was held for the third time by the Embassy of Portugal in Sofia, the "Camões" Institute, the Institute of Film and Audiovisuals and others.
The festival was opened with the screening of the romantic drama "Letters from the War" /2016/ directed by Ivo Ferreira. The film tells about the concerns, desires and hopes of the 28-year-old Antonio, mobilized as a doctor in the Portuguese army in 1971, in one of the toughest regions of the colonial war. He leaves his beloved in his homeland; both keep their love through the letters that he has been writing from the frontline for two years…
The festival showed that the contemporary Portuguese cinema is diverse in themes and it certainly loves to laugh. The Comedy "Embargo" /2010/ directed by Antonio Ferreira is about the inventor of a revolutionary machine, which has to overtake the shoe market and change his life completely. But first he must sell his invention ... The film "Sea Le" /2014/ by Joaquim Leitão is filled with laughter and romance. The film shows the life of 30-year-old women- their dreams, fears, doubts, ambitions, weaknesses and prejudices. While Vicente Alves’ comedy "Love Is Beautiful Because So" /2016/ tells the story of a woman living a hard moment in her life –on her birthday she gets fired from her work and abandoned from her boyfriend. But when she finds a job as a singer in a Portuguese bar, everything changes ... "Virado do Avesso" /2014/ directed by Edgar Pêra shows moments of the life of a famous writer who lives with his lover…
On the edge of the drama and the comedyis the film "Cats Don’t Have Vertigo" /2014/ directed by Antonio-Pedro Vasconcelos. For the fans of the drama the festival program offered movies like "Game of Checkers" /2015/ directed by Patricia Sequeira and "Ballad for the Dogs’ Beach" /1987/ directed by José Fonseca and Costa.
