August 15. Virgin Mary’s Day - one of the greatest Bulgarian holidays. People worship the Mother of God as protector of mothers and children.

They believe in the healing power of her icon, before which women pray for the health of their children and family. It is an old custom to spend the night before the holiday on a sacred place praying for something nice – for the women most often the wish is for a child and with the blessing of the Virgin it comes true. Fairs are held in many places, a festive table is laid. In some regions according to an old tradition Virgin Mary’s Day is celebrated on the 28 August.
