On June 5, H.E. Mr. Flemming Stender, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Denmark to the Republic of Bulgaria,
hosted a reception at his residence to mark the country's national holiday.
The event was attended by high-ranking officials, ambassadors, partners, and numerous friends of Denmark. Addressing the guests, he warmly welcomed them by saying: "A very warm welcome to the Danish Residence as we celebrate Denmark's Constitution Day today, June 5." He added: "Today, Denmark also celebrates Father's Day, so happy Father's Day to all the fathers with us today!"
He kept going: "On 5th June, 1849, Denmark adopted its first democratic constitution, marking a decisive step towards constitutional democracy. Constitution day is not only a celebration of an historic document but also of the principles that continue today to guide the Danish society – democracy, the rule of law, freedom of expression, equality, and the respect for human dignity.
These values remain as relevant today as there were nearly two centuries ago. In a world facing complex challenges – from security concerns, geopolitical tensions to climate change and economic uncertainty – the commitment to democratic institutions and international cooperation is more important than ever."
H.E. Mr. Flemming Stender emphasized that earlier that week a new government had been formed in Denmark, which would continue the country's long-standing and consistent support for multilateralism, a rule-based international order, deeper European integration, transatlantic cooperation, and fundamental values. The new government has presented an impressive 77-page programme outlining a number of ambitious objectives, including:
- Aims to play a leading role in Europe in the development of a more independent, stronger and more connected Europe by strengthening security, digital autonomy, competitiveness, further develop the green transition, and enhance cooperation on migration.
- Aims to continue Denmark´s steadfast support for Ukraine, including militarily support, as well as support for Ukraine on the way towards EU-membership.
- To meet NATO´s target to allocate at least 5% for defence and civil preparedness already by 2030;
- To roll-out more renewable energy, and accelerate electrification and grids to achieve green, cheap and secure energy supply that will make our societies more robust, less vulnerable and more competitive;
- To achieve at least 85% reduction of CO2 emissions by 2035, and climate neutrality by 2045.
- And to continue to live up to the UN´s objective to allocate 0,7% of GDP for development assistance. As Denmark has done for decades.
Later in his speech, the Ambassador highlighted the strong relationship between Denmark and Bulgaria, especially this year as we celebrate the 95th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries. With a touch of humor, he remarked:"A clear sign of the excellent relations between the two countries was the fact that Denmark gave 12 points for Dara in the European Song Contest! Bangaranga!"
"Our countries may differ in geography and history, but we are united by common values and a shared commitment to a peaceful, prosperous and democratic Europe. As members of EU and NATO, Denmark and Bulgaria work closely together to strengthen security, promote economic growth, support the green transition and uphold the fundamental principles upon which our European cooperation is built.
I am happy to see many successful Danish companies in Bulgaria contributing to growth, jobs, investments, and innovation. I have made it my special mission to visit all of them, and I think that I am well underway to reach that goal. I am happy to welcome many of those companies here today. A Danish-Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce has recently been established to further develop business ties."
His Excellency expressed his sincere gratitude to everyone who supported the Embassy's initiatives during Denmark's Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2025. He also thanked the corporate partners whose support helped make the celebration possible, as well as all guests, friends, and colleagues for their continued support, fruitful cooperation, and friendship, which contribute to strengthening Bulgarian–Danish relations.
He concluded by proposing a toast to Bulgaria and Denmark and to the enduring friendship between the two nations:
"Skål! Nazdrave! Thank you!"
Following the official part of the event, guests enjoyed pleasant conversations in the cool garden of the Residence while sampling Danish beer and other refreshing beverages, accompanied by exquisite Danish cheeses and a selection of savory and sweet specialties.
